“My mom and I giggled with joy in piecing together something that brought memories to life. There's something really special about holding the physical manifestation of an idea created by people who believe in bringing magic to life.”
    — Ximena N. Beltran Quan Kiu, contributor to Food & Wine, Bon Appetit
“Flagrant false advertising. All 1,000 pieces of this 'tasty' puzzle have the same exact flavor (cardboard). Were it not for the delightful imagery, writing and design, I would have demanded a refund.”
    — Adam Rubin, NYT best-selling author of Dragons Love Tacos, The Human Kaboom
“I believe in the power of making art, especially with other people. That's why I love Tasty Puzzles so much — a way to hang out with people and make something together (but minus the mess!). Food, stories, puzzles with friends... there is hope for humanity.”
    — Wendy MacNaughton, NYT best-selling illustrator and founder of DrawTogether

    What you need to know

    The Secret Sauce

      A 5-STAR EXPERIENCE

Tasty Puzzles aim to capture the experience of visiting some of our favorite restaurants in the world. Each puzzle unfolds one course at a time, and there's a brand new surprise for dessert.

      SOCIAL PUZZLING

Tasty Puzzles introduce a new invention we call "Wonky Tabs" which allow you to break the puzzle up into chunks, so a group of people can each have their own area to work on. (And if you want a solo puzzle experience, just ignore them and  everything will still work!)

MANUFACTURED BY THE MAGIC PUZZLE COMPANY

Tasty Puzzles are manufactured by the Magic Puzzle Company, who make some of the best-selling, highest-quality, top-rated puzzles in the world — with over 20,000 five-star reviews on Amazon and millions of puzzles sold!

      MADE FOR HUMANS BY HUMANS

Each photo is lovingly created by a team of photographers, chefs, food writers, prop stylists, magicians, Hollywood special effects artists, colorists, and designers — you won't find any stock art or AI here. These are real images shot on location!

“The best puzzle I've ever assembled — the secret at the end blew my mind.”
        — Alex M.
“I love the Back of House zine that accompanied the puzzle. The letter in the front genuinely made me tear up a bit.”
        — Jacky Chang
“Tasty Puzzles gives you one last little surprise that makes the whole experience even more fun — the reason we keep reaching for it over other puzzles.”
        — Sarah Ahn + Nam Soon Ahn, Ahnest Kitchen, James Beard Award-winners

        Meet the Chefs

        Series One Restaurants

          GAGE & TOLLNER

          Brooklyn, NY

Since 1879, this beloved Brooklyn chophouse has served Oysters Rockefeller and porterhouse steaks to the likes of Truman Capote, Mae West and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The restaurant is a true American story: Wild success, a fall from grace (the space was briefly an Arby's), and an unlikely resurrection in 2021 by Sohui Kim, Ben Schneider, and St John Frizell.

          OYSTER OYSTER

          Washington, DC

Oyster Oyster is a forward-thinking, Michelin-starred vegetarian tasting menu restaurant from James Beard Award winner Rob Rubba. The restaurant sources local and seasonal ingredients, adhering to a zero-waste policy — wine bottles are crushed into bowls and cooking oil turned into candles. We think this restaurant might be the future of fine dining.

          FRANKLIN BARBECUE

          Austin, TX

Many consider Franklin Barbecue the best BBQ purveyor in Texas, and therefore, the world. It's not unusual for eager customers to wait five-plus hours for Aaron and Stacy Franklin's legendary brisket and ribs. From its humble start in a trailer alongside Interstate-35, the Franklin's story is one of entrepreneurship, rock 'n' roll, and an obsession for smoking the finest meats around.

          SPECIAL ORDER NO. 1

          Chicago, IL

This exclusive puzzle tells the story of Tasty Puzzles co-founder Kevin Pang's Cantonese family cooking — how his dad Jeffrey became an unlikely YouTube celebrity and how they reconnected over their love of Chinese food. Everyone who play-tested this puzzle came away from it craving fried rice and dumplings.

Special Order No. 1 is only available as part of the Series 1 bundle!

            For the die-hard fans

            What is a puzzle die?

Picture a giant cookie cutter that stamps a sheet of cardboard into 1,000 pieces. The dirty secret of the puzzle industry is most companies reuse the same few dies for everything. We design every one by hand, and it takes a stupid amount of time (like, months), because tweak one piece and you have to tweak the eight around it. The payoff: food-shaped pieces, dad-joke pieces, and surprises we won’t spoil.

We also invented Wonky Tabs, a new way to solve a jigsaw puzzle with friends and family. Nearly every piece has one of nine unique tab shapes, and each shape marks its own section of the puzzle. Sort by shape, divvy them up, and everyone builds a section. Or ignore the tabs and solve it like any other 1,000-piece puzzle.

            The Zine

            Back of House

Having witnessed first-hand the collapse of print media, we arrived at the only logical solution: a magazine sealed inside a jigsaw puzzle box.

Chefs call the kitchen “back of house,” so that’s what we named Tasty Puzzle Company’s food zine.

What’s inside each issue of Back of House:

            • Original reporting and stories, written and edited by actual humans, like in the ’90s
            • Recipes from the restaurant
            • A field guide to dishes featured in the puzzle
            • Behind-the-scenes vignettes
            • Word games from our friends at Puzzmo

Back of House is written by James Beard Award winner and Tasty Puzzle Company co-founder Kevin Pang (The New York Times, Esquire), edited by Pulitzer Prize winner Lisa Pollak (This American Life, The Baltimore Sun), and designed by former Lucky Peach art director Walter Green.

Print media isn’t dead. It’s just in a thousand pieces.

            How we chose the restaurants

We started with a wish list of 50 dream restaurants: places with great food and, more importantly, a great backstory. At the top were three that couldn’t seem more different: Franklin Barbecue in Austin, Texas (arguably the most beloved BBQ joint in America); Gage & Tollner in Brooklyn (the quintessential New York chophouse); and Oyster Oyster in Washington, D.C. (a vegetarian tasting menu that’s somehow both old-world and futuristic). We pitched each one on becoming a puzzle. Much to our delight, all three said yes.

            What's up with the pre-order?

            - +

Back in 2020, we launched Magic Puzzles on Kickstarter and became the most-backed, highest-funded puzzle project of all time. Now that we're finally ready to share Tasty Puzzles, we're returning to a crowdfunding/pre-order system to help get our first printing out into the world. Here's why:

            1. A pre-order helps us figure out how many puzzles to print so we don't immediately go out of stock. When we launched Magic Puzzles, our goal was to raise about $40,000. We dramatically underestimated public interest and ended up needing to print over 7,600% more puzzles than we originally planned! If we didn't do a Kickstarter, we might have been sold out for months while we caught up with demand.
            2. Cash flow. Tasty Puzzle Company is a tiny business, and we can't afford to make too many puzzles in our first run without the risk of going into massive, life-ruining debt. By taking pre-orders, everyone who really wants a puzzle is guaranteed get one, and we don't risk going out of business in the process.
            3. Figuring out which puzzles people want. We want to launch a whole "series" of puzzles to show what we're about, and your pre-orders will help us figure out how many of each puzzle to order.
            4. Doing something cool for our fans! Finally, doing a pre-order lets us connect with the Tasty Puzzles Sardaukar — the day-one fans — and do something cool for them. In this case we've made an exclusive bonus puzzle that you can only get by ordering the Series One Bundle!

What's the "magic trick" at the end of the puzzle?

            - +

Tasty Puzzles feature a BRAND NEW illusion at the end that's totally different from what's in Magic Puzzles. It looks incredible when photographed or recorded on your phone, and it's effortless to perform and share with your friends. We love the reactions it's gotten in playtesting, and we think you'll love it, too.

How is the puzzle dust removed from Tasty Puzzles during production?

            - +

"Puzzle Dust" is little particles of cardboard that come loose when a puzzle is die cut. It's a serious nuisance in the world of jigsaw puzzles!

Each Tasty Puzzle is individually sifted by hand to remove as much dust as possible before the pieces are packed in resealable bags. We think we're the only company in the world that spends the time and money to do this.

For obvious reasons, we can't guarantee the removal of every granule of dust. In almost every puzzle, our process removes enough dust from the box so that whatever remains is imperceptible—that's what we mean when we say "no puzzle dust." Occasionally, we see cases of human error where a small amount of dust is left in with the pieces. So far, the most puzzle dust we've measured in a Magic Puzzle is 0.25g (about 1/3 the weight of one average 0.8g puzzle piece), and we're always working with our factory to improve the process.

Why is international shipping so expensive?

            - +

International shipping is expensive because puzzles are transported on multiple airplanes, boats, and trucks across long distances and go through complex customs and handling steps that add cost.

Nobody wishes that international shipping was cheaper more than we do!

High shipping rates put us in a difficult position. If we only ship to the U.S., some customers will be upset because they can't order the puzzles. And if we ship outside of the U.S., other backers will be upset because of the high international shipping cost.

We think the option that's the most fair and will upset the fewest customers is to make Tasty Puzzles available in as many countries as possible and charge the lowest possible price by offering shipping "at cost" — meaning you pay what we pay (and we make absolutely no profit on the shipping fee).

What if I'm missing a puzzle piece?

            - +

If something goes wrong and you're missing a piece — or if anything else is wrong with your puzzle — we will work with you to make things right!

The good news is that missing pieces are extremely rare: based on the data we've collected over the last six years of making puzzles, the incidence of missing pieces (or any other QA issues) is about 0.05%.

Will Tasty Puzzles be sold anywhere else?

            - +

In the future, we hope to produce more Tasty Puzzles and make them available in retail stores and other places, but right now we're focused on this pre-order!

Will all pre-orders be fulfilled before Tasty Puzzles are sold anywhere else?

            - +

Right now, Tasty Puzzles are only available right here on our website, directly from us. Once Tasty Puzzles are delivered to our warehouse, our priority will be to ship all the pre-orders before puzzles show up anywhere else.

TLDR: Yes! That’s our goal with this pre-order.

Back in 2020, after Magic Puzzles launched on Kickstarter, we instantly got a lot of demand from retailers, and we were able to distribute some puzzles from that first print run to stores around the U.S. Our goal was for every backer got their order before MPC puzzles were available in stores, and we did pretty well: over 95% of Magic Puzzles backers got their puzzles before they were available elsewhere. But there were four issues that led to a few backers receiving their orders later:

1). Some US Target stores put puzzles on the shelves well in advance of our agreed-upon shelf date (while some puzzles going to backers were still in the mail). We made Target aware, and they removed those puzzles from shelves until the official release date.

2). Brexit happened during our shipping process. While we planned in advance for all the new procedures, our puzzles for EU backers ended up getting stuck on a boat docked off the coast of the UK for over a month. We did everything possible to make up that time, but ultimately orders going to Europe shipped later than we hoped.

3). COVID. We shipped everyone their Magic Puzzles during the 2020 lockdown, and every mail service had delays. We saw about 3-5% of orders get stuck in various stages of processing. So, a few backers were still waiting for a lost or delayed package when Magic Puzzles started appearing in stores. We worked with those backers to find their packages with the mail carrier, reship orders at our own expense, or even offer refunds.

4). The biggest issue was that many backers simply didn't provide their shipping information in time! About 60,000 people backed the Magic Puzzles Kickstarter project, and most of our backers responded to the survey within a few weeks (and those backers generally received their puzzles on time). Everyone else got their puzzles as soon as they responded to the survey. Believe it or not, our backer surveys went out in mid 2020, but we’re still getting responses to this day!
